4843 - RARE Trade Beads - SOLD AFRICAN TRADE BEADS: Rare Deep Sky Blue Beads.
A total of 16 rare glass beads: old opaque sky blue-turquoise glass beads that have come from the African Trade.
The ones that are irregular are 9-10 mm in diameter, mandrell wound, & some have slightly varied lengths. They are from the late "1800's" to the early "1900's"- aprox. 100 years old. They are from varied origins, possibly Chinese, Bohemian, or even German.
The blue glass beads that have a more uniform, (9-10 mm diam.), are molded Bohemians from the early "1900's".
As with many glass beads there is a certain amount of mystery with some of these beads. These are great old beads that have a nice 3-4 mm wide inner hole that works well for cord stringing. They show some wear but are in good condition.
In the "1960 - 70's" the African traders coined the name of "padres", for these old blue, (& other colors), opaque beads because of the look & similarities of another wound "padre" that was sold for trade to the North American peoples during the "fur trade" era, but they are a different "beadstyle" despite similarities.
The beads here came out of the African Trade. On the African continent these old sky blue-turquoise beads have represented status, currency, & position. There they were traditionally strung as neck wear on rafia or large colorful beaded circles.
